MCCCD invites applicants to submit an application packet to the Public Safety Police Officer (PSPO) pool to be considered for PSPO openings at any of our 10 colleges. Openings may appear at any time during the year.

Background checks: MCCCD conducts criminal background checks on all new employees. In addition, MCCCD is required by Arizona law to participate in the Department of Homeland Security E-Verify program. All new employees will be checked to see if they are eligible to work in the U.S.
Minimum Qualifications to Apply
(Note: these have changed this pool year)
- Must possess an active AZPOST peace officer certificate or have the ability to obtain one (by meeting the following requirements #2 through #6)
- Must have successfully graduated from a bone fide law enforcement training academy, and if not from an academy certified by AZPOST, must demonstrate that the training was equivalent to that required by AZPOST by submitting a completed AZPOST Record of Equivalent Training with the application.
- Must have completed the prior agency’s probationary period functioning as a solo police officer or investigator performing law enforcement duties
- Applicants not currently certified by AZPOST must successfully complete a Peace Officer Agility Test prior to employment
- Must successfully complete a job related visual examination, physical examination, psychological examination and drug screen prior to employment
- Must possess a current, valid and unrestricted Arizona driver license or have the ability to obtain one
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR techniques
For Hire by MCCCD and Certification by AZPOST also requires:
- Applicant must be 21 years of age.
- Applicant must have graduated from high school or hold a GED certificate.
- Applicant must be a United States citizen.
- Applicant must have at least 20/20 vision uncorrected or 20/20 vision corrected by glasses or hard contact lenses if uncorrected acuity is 20/80 or better, or 20/20 vision corrected by soft contact lenses if uncorrected acuity is 20/200 or better.
- Applicant must have vision capable of distinguishing basic color groups against a favorable background.
- Honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces (if served).
- Successful completion of a background investigation which meets the standards of Section R13-4-105. The investigation shall affirm that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications, has not engaged in conduct or a pattern of conduct that would jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession, and is of good moral character.
- Successful completion of a job related physical examination, visual examination, and drug screen.
- Reading and affirmation by signature the applicant's understanding and agreement to abide by the code.
- Successful completion of the Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) if required (for those that do not possess an active AZPOST certification or an inactive certification and have been inactive in law enforcement for more than three (3) years, or are from out of state).

- Conviction of a felony or any offense legally considered a felony if committed in Arizona.
- Previous denial or revocation of certified status.
- Current suspension of certification status pursuant to Arizona POST Rule R13-4-109.
- Illegal sale, production, cultivation, or transportation of marijuana for sale.
- Illegal use of marijuana for any purpose within the past three years.
- Illegal use of marijuana other than for experimentation.
- Illegal use of marijuana while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
- Illegal sale, production, cultivation, or transportation for sale of any dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana.
- Illegal use of dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years.
- Illegal use of dangerous drugs or narcotics other than for experimentation.
- Illegal use of dangerous drugs or narcotics while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
- A recognized pattern of abuse of prescription medication.
- Conviction or judgment to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency so as to indicate a disrespect for traffic laws and a disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway with the past three years.

The expected duration of the selection process is affected by a number of factors. The process typically is completed within three to five months. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified of the date and time of each of the following processes:
- District Oral Board - Applicants who pass the screening process will be evaluated to determine skill levels in verbal communication, judgment, problem solving, and other desired skills, including customer service and writing reports.
- Post DOB Review - Applicants who successfully complete the Oral Board phase of the selection process will be reviewed to determine placement on an eligibility list.
- College Interviews - When vacant positions are identified, College Commanders will convene to interview candidates who have been placed on the eligibility list. Interviews are sometimes scheduled on short notice. Applicants should take care to notify the Strategic Staffing department of address, email or telephone number changes.
If an applicant is recommended for hire after a college interview, a conditional offer of employment is extended; this is followed by a second phase of selection processes:
- Background Investigation - Applicants who successfully complete the college interview phase of the selection process will be required to undergo a background investigation consistent with Arizona POST requirements.
- Polygraph Examination - When the applicant is notified of the commencement of the background investigation, he/she will also be scheduled for a polygraph examination. Upon arrival for the polygraph examination, the applicant MUST provide the following:
- Two sets of fingerprint cards; blank cards will be provided by MCCCD
- Copy of driving history (All states in which applicant has resided within the past five years)
- Arizona driver’s license
- Local law enforcement agency clearances
- Birth certificate
- High school diploma or GED
- Social Security card
- Medical Examination - Candidates will undergo a medical examination administered by a licensed physician. The examination will include a physical examination, vision test, hearing test, chest x-ray, laboratory tests, and a drug screening. The medical examination is scheduled and paid for by MCCCD.
- Psychological Evaluation - The psychological evaluation is behaviorally based and is intended to assess the applicant's suitability for peace officer duties as a District employee. A minimum of four (4) hours should be allotted for this evaluation. This is scheduled and paid for by MCCCD.
- Other tests may include weapons qualifying, driving and a waiver examination if required (AZPOST Waiver Process), and if required, the Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) which is a timed test including an obstacle course, a weighted (165 lb) bag drag, two 6' fence climbs, and a 500 yard-yard run. Evaluation is designed to give the applicant an opportunity to demonstrate his/her physical condition. Scoring is Pass/Fail. This is required only for those qualified applicants who do not possess an active AZPOST certification or an inactive certification and have been inactive in law enforcement for more than three (3) years, or are from out of state).
Formal Employment: - Once the selection process is completed and all requirements have been met, the candidate will be notified and a confirmed offer of employment extended. Upon acceptance of the offer of employment, the candidate's name will be placed on the Maricopa Community Colleges' Governing Board Agenda for hiring approval.
